The more skills you have, the more value you give, and the more value you give, the more money you earn. So it is simple; your income is directly proportional to the skills you have. With the year 2023 starting off, it’s better that I share with you high-income skills you can learn on your own in your spare time and increase your income.

The skills I’ll share do not need you to go to school, even though some are offered in schools. Most of the skills also won’t require you to get a job in order to make money, you can still make money without getting employed. But, you can still look for a job.

Coding:

As every business changes to digital, coding as a skill is getting very high in demand. Coders or programmers are the ones who create websites, and mobile applications, or do data analytics. With coding, you can easily get a job or code your own applications and monetize them. There are plenty of resources to learn to code including; Code Academy, Skillshare, freecodecamp.org and many more. I’m a coder myself, therefore you can reach out to me and I will gladly help at a fee or free. You can also get started with web development by reading my blogs.

Is coding the highest income skill? Yes, coding is considered a high-income skill.

Marketing:

Every single business out here needs marketing. This means there is a high demand for marketers (good marketers). How can people ever buy from you when they don’t even know you exist? With good marketing skills, you can get a job, freelance or market your own products and make money. Marketing generally is being able to run ads, content marketing, email marketing, search engine optimization etc. It is helpful not to try to do everything in marketing, instead focus on one area first and get really good at it. Here are some of the areas you can start:

• Business-to-Business Marketing
• SEO Marketing
• Email Marketing

Graphic Design:

This is one skill that keeps increasing in demand, from logos to letterheads to visual marketing assets you will be paid highly for this work. Well, you might see it as hard but trust me, if you master it really well you can take good pay per task. I have worked with a client for whom I create marketing assets even though I’m not too much into graphics design. You can get a job, and work as a freelancer on Fiverr and Upwork or FB if you market yourself well. You can also create quality mockups and sell them on Inkmanke.com. Learning to be a professional designer can take a long time but you can use easier-to-use tools like Canva.com which we will go through on my youtube channel.

Content Creation:

You will agree with me that we live in a creator economy. Look at the biggest stars of today, they are YouTubers, Instagram influencers or TikTok stars. You don’t need any capital or assets to start creating content, you simply start! Maybe a little guide below:

• Get a niche (e.g. entertainment or educational)
• Create an account on your favourite platform. If you want video content then create YouTube, IG or FB if it’s blogging then Medium, dev.to etc.
• Start creating your content and share them broadly.
• You can as well create your own personal blog like me, LOL {^^}

How do you earn from this? Well, you can write for a company or organization and get paid, use Adsense on YT and blogs, sell your personal products or courses( talking about that you can enrol on my digital marketing class or coding classes ), you can also do affiliate marketing. Hint: people like Mungai Eve make up to Ksh. 2,000,000 per month on youtube with ads alone.

Sales

Did you know that 40% of youths in Nairobi survive with sales? And yes, sales is different from marketing. Sales are where you talk to a client one on one. For example, you may be good at creating ads but can’t seal deals one on one with clients. Sales are not taught in schools, but it is a skill you can learn from successful salespeople. I am currently reading a book on sales and watching several videos about sales.

All in all, if you are a good salesperson you can be sure of good pay, either on commissions, salary or your own products selling.

Video Production

Video production is becoming more and more important in business, whichever field you are in. therefore there will always be a demand. From ads to reels to posts, good videos are key. Companies will always outsource this one so check for gigs on Fiverr. You can also find some companies or influencers to have a long-term business with.

Copywriting

Copywriting in simple terms is the art of writing persuasively so that readers are more likely to perform a certain action or make a purchase. This is a highly paid skill all over the world. You learn this skill online and in books, you can sell it on Fiverr, get employed or sell your products and services. If you are so good at it you can make so much with affiliate marketing.
